Even in Thuvia, Maid of Mars, the lost civilisation was of vital importance to the lore of Mars, while here the plausibility of Martians not knowing about them is hard to believe. The first three volume of the Martian series of Edgar Rice Burroughs focused on how John Carter, former cavalier of Virginia, made his way to the planet Barsoom (what we call Mars) and won the hand of Dejah Thoris, princess of Helium after having to repeatedly rescue her from one danger after another. One lost world too many? For the first time since reading the series, I have started to wonder just how many lost Civilisations Mars can possibly have. The grotesque elements in the Bantoom arc are a bit Weird Tales-esque and are have changed the tone of the series away from a family friendly direction towards a more “horror” direction. The main characters Gahan and Tara are passable, but at worst feel like pale imitations of John Carter and Dejah Thoris. Third person perspective offers a wider variety of point of view characters than the other books.Ĭriticism: Third person perspective feels a little detached, and slows down the narrative when one character catches up with what happened to another.

The new alien sidekick is one of the best in the series. Both Bantoom and Manator are very memorable settings. I have been reading the series in order, but this is the first review I have written. However I still consider the John Carter trilogy to be the series’ peak so far. Review: I thoroughly enjoyed the Chessmen of Mars, and found it a step up from the previous book, Thuvia, Maid of Mars. 11 Epilogue where John Carter explains some hanging plot threads in the story to Edgar Rice Burroughs. 10 John Carter arrives for the final battle against the Manatorians and with a surprise ally in taxidermist I-Gos, they battle O-Tar for the liberation of Tara, and the slaves of Gathol. 09 Gahan solves the mystery of the tomb of O-Mai, the long dead Jeddak of Manator, and exposes the cowardice and superstitions of the Manatorians. 07 Gahan and the slaves of Gathol play a deadly game of Jetan with themselves as live chess pieces.Ġ8 Tara is still captured by the evil O-Tar, so Gahan starts a rebellion with A-Kor and another ally called U-Thor of Manatos, a neighbouring city. Allies are found in the many slaves of Gahol, and a possibly candidate for the throne called A-Kor. 06 The heroes discover the mysteries of Manator, including meeting the mad taxidermist I-Gos, and explore the martian rat tunnels underneath the city. They leave Bantoom in a flier.Ġ5 Gahan, Tara, and Ghek are captured by another lost civilisation called Manator and we meet the evil Jeddak of Manator, O-Tar. She is captured and is sent to the leader of the Luud tribe of Kaldanes.Ġ4 Gahan of Gathol, Tara’s suitor arrives in the land of Batoom and together with Ghek, a newly rebel Kaldane who finds himself partial to Tara’s singing voice, they battle the leader of Luud. 03 Tara discovers the lost land of Kaldanes and the Rykors. Later, Tara goes flying and a storm sends Tara's flyer thousands of miles across Barsoom. 02 Princess Tara, daughter of John Carter, rejects a bloke called Gahan of Gathol at a dance party at Helium. I have further divided these arcs in two to delineate a sort of 4 Act structure.Ġ1 Prologue: John Carter visit with a new story to tell Edgar Rice Burroughs. ** Barsoom Book 5: The Chessmen of Mars**Ĭhessmen of Mars can be divided into roughly two arcs: The Bantoom Arc and the Manator Arc.
